Current version: 1.5.6

Internet Explorer users:

Firefox users (Windows, Mac, Linux): Click here to install.

You can take the library search tools with you as you do research on the internet with this browser extension toolbar. After you've installed it on your computer, check the guide below to see how you can start using it.

Embedded Browser Toolbar

toolbar

The left-side drop-down menu features links to common Downtown Campus resources including the catalog, I-Share, and electronic resources. Use the search box to search the catalog, I-Share, WorldCat, or Google Scholar. You can even search for an e-journal. The toolbar searches the catalog by default; use the right-side drop-down menu to change resources.

Right-Click Menu

right-click menu example

The LibX Toolbar adds new options to your browser's right-click menu. Highlight a title, author, or keywords anywhere on the screen, then use the right-click menu to search the catalog or Google Scholar. You can change the right-click search functions in the LibX preferences (in the left-side drop-down menu). Click the "Context Menu" tab to make changes.

Off-Campus Access

To connect to an electronic database or journal from off-campus, right-click in the website and select "Reload [the website] via EZProxy". The list of available resources is available here; the resources marked "R" can be used off-campus. You can also use the link to access special features (like links to articles) in Google Scholar when off-campus.

Search Google Scholar

LibX can search Google Scholar for articles. If you are on campus, or using the proxy server to access Google Scholar, Google Scholar will provide a link (click "Full Text", not "Full Text (SFX Beta)" to look for articles). Select a citation, then drag-and-drop it onto the Scholar button on the toolbar. You can use this feature even from inside a PDF file, which makes retrieving resources mentioned in a PDF file a snap. If you are off-campus, reload Google Scholar into the campus proxy server by using the right-click menu.

Embedded Links in Amazon, WorldCat, Other Sites

embedded links example

LibX places cues in web pages you visit if the Library has resources related to that page. Click on the IIT icon to see if the Library has the resource. For instance, you may see the IIT icon when searching Amazon or Barnes & Noble. This icon links to the Library Catalog. Firefox users will see cues displayed in Google, Yahoo! Search, the NY Times Book Review, and other sites. Internet Explorer users will see cues only in Google and Amazon.

xISBN

A book title can have different ISBNs for the paperback, the hardcover, even for different editions. LibX supports OCLC's xISBN service: you can find a book even if the Library's version uses a different ISBN.
