Doing and Teaching Legal Research

Professors are using wikis as a collaborative space for students to discuss class-related issues. Libraries are using wikis to encourage students to discuss resources. Wikis can be used by any researcher to organize research materials.

Those wikis in which authorship is closed can be used as research resources. Open wikis can also be used for research, but with caution.

Wiki Software

These applications can be used to create your own wiki. For those applications which host wikis themselves, called "wiki farms", setting up a wiki is easy. Learning the syntax for editing a wiki, however, can be a little challenging. Many wikis are now offering tools to simplify editing.

  • EditThis -- a free wiki farm that uses the MediaWiki application (the wiki software used by wikipedia)
  • PBWiki -- one of the simplest wiki farms and wiki applications. Basic wikis are free; advanced features are available for a fee
  • PMWiki -- a free, powerful server-based wiki application. This wiki uses PMWiki.
  • Wikimatrix -- a service for comparing wiki applications. Use ti to find the wiki application that best suits your needs. The site also features a blogware comparison tool.
