In honor of I. J. Berkson, distinguished Chicago-Kent alumnus from the Class of 1918, the Berkson Reading Room is modeled after traditional reading rooms of the nineteenth century and holds the Library's reserve collection. The open reserve collection includes the most current edition of major hornbook and treatise series as well as an Illinois state law reference collection. Materials from the reserve collection are selected by reference librarians and faculty specifically to support the Chicago-Kent or Stuart curriculum. The Berkson Reading Room also houses the Library’s Illinois Law Collection. Materials in this space are identified in the catalog as in location “DTC Reserve Room (10th Floor)”.
Superseded legal and business materials are kept in a special area on the 6th floor known as the Closed Stacks. The Library has no remote storage area, so all materials not fit for the general collection, but important enough to keep, are kept in the Closed Stacks. Clients who wish to use these materials should ask for assistance at the Service Desk. Materials in this area are identified in the catalog as in location “Closed Stacks”.
The Library supports Faculty current awareness activities by purchasing a copy of major journals exclusively for faculty use. These materials are kept in the Faculty Lounge.
Located on the 9th floor, just beside the Reference Desk, the Leisure Reading Room is a multi-purpose room that houses the most recent edition of various newspapers, newsmagazines and other current awareness materials. The Room, with its nine oversized plush chairs, was designed as a space for students to socialize and relax. After materials have cycled through the Leisure Reading Room, they are collected for a short period on the Current Awareness stacks on the 9th floor. In the catalog, this location is indicated as “DTC Current Awareness Shelves (9th Floor, Range 969)”.
Located on the Library’s 8th floor, the Media Room is fully-equipped and can seat up to 6 students. The Media Room features a stereo, a 27" TV, and a DVD/VCR player. In addition, the Library has a computer where one can listen to lectures on the Internet or run special software for a class. Because it has two tables, the Media Room is especially useful for programs which teach trial advocacy skills. Materials in this location are designated in the catalog as being in location “DTC Media Services”.
The Library's New Mothers' Room for nursing mothers is on the 8th floor. The room features a sink, a table, and a refrigerator. To use this room, ask for assistance at the Reference Desk.
