iit logomarkLibrary Use Policies

These policies are intended to keep the library a comfortable, safe environment for everyone. Please respect the rights of others who are studying and working in the library. If you observe anyone violating these policies, please inform the library staff. Students who persist in breaking these rules may be referred to their academic dean for appropriate disciplinary action.

ADA Compliance

The IIT Downtown Campus Library seeks to make its services, facilities, and programs as accessible as possible to our users, including those who have disabilities. The DTC Library will provide equal access to all IIT students, faculty, and staff. In addition, patrons from the general public will be served to the extent that time and resources allow.

Any patron who cannot reach materials from stacks or climb up stairs to access the 10th floor I.J. Berkson Reading Room may request assistance from the Circulation Desk (circreq@kentlaw.edu; 312-906-5600). The Circulation Desk is staffed at all times when the Library is open. Circulation staff members are happy to assist users in getting materials from the stacks; we can also allow you access to the 10th floor through a special staff entrance.

Other types of assistance may also be offered such as:

  • Modified Course Reserve loan periods;
  • Assistance with photocopying on-site;
  • Assistance using the Library's online catalog or e-resources; and
  • Reference by appointment.

Patrons who are concerned about access to materials or feel that they are being treated unfairly due to their disabled status are encouraged to contact the Director of the Library, Keith Ann Stiverson (kstivers@kentlaw.edu; 312-906-5610). We also welcome any suggestions you might have about how we can improve the Library.

Courteous Behavior:

Noise & Cell Phones - No cell phone use in the Library:

If you need to talk, please whisper quietly or use a group study room for extended conversations. If you need to take a call, please take your cell phone outside the Library or into one of the stairwells. Keep the noise levels down on personal music devices and always wear headphones when listening to sound files.

Food and Drink - No food in the Library, but drinks are OK:

You may bring any drink into the Library. We do ask that you pick up after yourself and use the appropriate recycling bin to dispose of containers. Food is not allowed, so please don't bring it into the Library.

Unattended Belongings - Be careful with your things:

Please do not leave any belongings unattended. The library is open to the public and thefts, while not common, have occurred. Belongings left unattended may be removed by security. If you are missing any personal items, please notify a librarian or the Circulation Desk on the 9th floor as soon as possible. Any items turned in to the library staff will be kept at the Circulation Desk in our "Lost & Found" drawer until the end of the day, then turned over to the security officer.

Other Reminders

Keep your study area neat and clean. If you pull library materials from the shelves without checking them out, return them to the bookcarts behind the circulation desk. Walk quietly through study areas. Never write in or mark up library materials. Erase the whiteboards in group study rooms when you leave. Don't move furniture around. Don't block pathways with laptop cords or backpacks.

  • Persons under the age of 18 should be supervised by a parent or guardian at all times.
