Advanced Search
If you know what articles you need and don’t want to look at unrelated information, use this search.
STEP 1: The first new tools in Advanced Search are “Search Fields” and “Boolean Connectors”
Search Fields: There are two kinds of search fields – ones that search in the citation (for author, title, etc.) and ones that search specific categories, like geographical areas or people or companies
NOTE: You don’t have to use any of these. You can enter your topics as “keywords” without adding a search field and your search will still work fine.
Boolean Connectors: These connectors make it easy to combine or limit your keywords
Example: If you have too many articles about Steve Jobs when you search for iPod, you can put the connector to “not” and enter “Steve Jobs” – that will exclude all articles that are mostly about Steve Jobs
STEP 2: In Basic Search, “Filters” temporarily excluded all articles that were not from the sources you wanted. In Advanced Search, you can set up “limits” that look only for very specific sources or dates.
