Library of International Relations
Located on the Library’s 8th floor, the Library of International Relations became a part of the Library in 1983. The Library of International Relations (LIR) was founded in 1932 by Eloise ReQua (1902-1989). After obtaining her master’s degree in international trade, Ms. ReQua established the LIR to promote international understanding and friendship by examining the world’s cultures, geography and economy.
Through her massive correspondence, Ms. ReQua was able to obtain materials which were not widely distributed, such as the collection of Russian tempura war posters. The LIR was also one of the first 27 libraries to be designated a UN Depository. Since its move to the Library, most LIR materials have been integrated into the collection, with the exception of some of the UN documents that retain their UN document numbers and are shelved in a special location on the 8th floor.
